Solar Control Glass – Helping to keep your interiors cooler to maximising the use of your living space
Our Solar Control glass option helps to prevent the build-up of heat during hot summer months and is ideal for large panes and applications like Conservatory roofing.
The solar control coating reflects the heat from the sun back to the outside of the glass keeping the interior cooler in the summer months, and significantly reduces the amount of heat that is able to pass into your property providing you with a more comfortable and useable living space.
When ordered the coating is incorporated into our glass solutions for maximum solar control and is combined with a Low ‘E’ glass for maximum thermal insulation. Coloured tints available on our glass solutions also provide solar control as they absorb more heat and radiate it back to the outside. Combining a tint with a coating to reflect even more heat will increase the overall cooling performance even further.
The result? You can have the best of both worlds – solar control coating to keep cooler in warmer summer months, and the thermal retention properties of Low ‘E’ in the winter.
How Solar Control Glazing Works
Glass manages solar heat radiation by three mechanisms: reflectance, transmittance and absorptance.
These are defined as follows:
- Reflectance – the proportion of solar radiation that is reflected back into the atmosphere.
- Direct transmittance – the proportion of solar radiation transmitted directly through the glass into the property.
- Absorptance – the proportion of solar radiation absorbed by the glass.
In hot conditions or for building with high internal loads, solar control glass is used to minimise solar heat gain. It allows sunlight to pass through a window or façade while radiating and reflecting away a large degree of the sun’s heat.
In more temperate conditions, it can be used to balance solar control with high levels of natural light.
